I'm listening to the free compilation album I burned for my gig. Took me about three hours to do all of these:

What's the track list? I love making compilations. I made one called "You say the eighties were shit but I say fuck you the eighties were awesome!" This just had a shitload of great 80's synthpop and stuff. I made another called "The Baroness Thatcher Project" that had some classic punk and post-punk songs which related to the general mood of that era, plus "I'm in Love with Margaret Thatcher" by the Not Sensibles.

I lost them both unfortunately. Damn iPods and their stupid filesystem.

I might burn a few more for the 4th July gig, not sure yet.
I'd love to actually make money from all the effort I put into that compilation, because it took me bloody ages and I only have 47p in my bank account at the moment.

Yeah but I'm not sure the bands on it would be ok with it. I'd have to ask them anyway. From their point of view it's free promo but if I'm making money from it it's different.

I have been thinking about doing it properly and giving the bands a cut of the profit though.

I have had a lot of positive feedback on them considering I'm the only person that's listened to it all the way through!

My media players choice of the night seems to be nice calm bedouin soundclash, send more paramedics, then desmond dekker, the chocking victim.... lol its really wierd! its like ahh relaxing reggea and ska, then shouting loud scary music inbetween, my brains getting confused.

I very recently discovered Dan Le Sac VS Scroobius Pip so i've been listening to that a lot this week. I've also been listening to those remixes of I Got Love on iTunes. I think Kate Tempest's verse was better than the song it was sang over.

I like Dan Le Sac VS Scroobius Pip, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they are signed to strange famous records.

Yeah Dan le Sac are fun... and really liked their remix of King Blues' What if Punk Never Happened Smile

Listening to a weird mix of stuff for essay-writing purposes:
    Asian Dub Foundation
    Trojan Roots & Culture compilation
    Trojan Dub compilation
    Smiling Ivy
    Bob Marley
    JB Conspiracy

    And not for work:

I saw Mouthwash supporting King Blues in Swansea not long ago, wasn't sure wether I liked them or not. Some songs god me nodding along a bit but that's about it. I probably would have enjoyed their set a bit more if the rest of the crowd did as well though, they didn't go down to well. Probably because most of the people there were there to see the now super-famous king blues and not even fans of ska that much. (Just what I think anyway)

I don't think so, I'd have to take it up with the bands and sort out sharing the money out and everything.
But what I will do is if I have some left over is post you one for free.

I'm hoping that I don't have any left over though, I made 50 and need 49 people to come to the gig to break even. But then again maybe people won't want the cd! I'll let you know anyway. Smile

I dont think thats entirely true-we(non stop promotions)did a compilation a few years back now and charged a pound for it, we didnt make any money off it at all and the pound covered the costs of making the cd and the postage.
None of the bands were fussed about money from it as it was a promotional tool that was getting their music out there.
I think the best way to deal with that in hindsight though, would be to make some extra copies for the bands on the compilation to sell at their gigs and what not for however much they wanted to sell them for.

Yeah I was thinking about doing that next time. There WILL be a next time as well, I've loved making this. I would like some cash for all of my efforts, next time I'll do it with intent to make money rather than just promotion. (By the way every band has a link to their myspace on the track listing, it's promotion for them as well.)

There really isn't that much costs to cover, 50 blank CDs about £5 from tesco, plastic slip covers £2ish for 50. and however much 50 A4 pieces of paper costs + printer ink. But I didn't pay for the last two, already had them.

Yeah couldn't make up my mind when i saw them in Shef, and missed half their set cos went home to get my cam, but they seemed really sound guys and i'd got in free, so thought i'd take the risk and buy the cd off em
It's got some really good tunes on it Smile glad i bought it
