(I used the dictionary.com definition of thriving to base my answer on. I don't know if the ska scene is growing since I don't have any reference points in the past)

    3. What aspects of the 2-Tone scene in the late 70s/ early 80s do you think are still present in the current scene?

The guitar soundz, the choice of instruments, the subject matter of songs. Probably other stuff too.

    Fan

    2. Would you say that the current Ska scene is a thriving scene?

Musically, definately. Not so much financially. I'm often being suprised by how many more people understand and even like ska lately though. My collection's been ripped into many iTunes libraries lately and all by request! good times.

    3. What aspects of the 2-Tone scene in the late 70s/ early 80s do you think are still present in the current scene?

I'd say most of it is still present apart from the fashion. It's just a bit different to how it used to be. It's just progressed. There's still a ton of appreciation towards the 2-Tone era and people still seem to care about the bands seeing as The Specials and The Beat are enjoying pretty successful comebacks. (I think)

I can't really compare but yes it's definately alternative and incredibly varied which contributes I guess.

    8. Is Ska your favourite genre of music?

    Yes

    9. What type of Ska music do you listen to the most?

    3rd wave.
Although I reckon there's such a thing as a 4th wave now. or it's coming anyway.

    not sure

    3. What aspects of the 2-Tone scene in the late 70s/ early 80s do you think are still present in the current scene?

a recent return to the ska sounds of the 70s/80s in modern bands. the message that 2-tone stands for is still present.

    4. Do you think the current scene has a distinct fashion image? (for example
like the tonic suit and pork pie hat of 2-Tone)

    No

    5. Do you think that ska continues to carry the political and social dimension that it did at the emergence of 2-Tone?

yes and no. the world is a very different place now but there are still messages that are promoted through ska.

    6. Do you believe there is a geographical focus to Ska music in 2009 like there was in Coventry and the West Midlands in the late 70s?

    No

    7. Do you think the nature of the current scene suggests it has a counter-cultural or alternative element to it? If so how is it the same/differs to the 2-Tone phenomenon?

I think that the current ska scene is still pretty underground and therefore it could be seen as being 'counter-cultural' or 'alternative'. I think the merging of ska with punk which is so characteristic of current ska bands has meant that it's not always going to be accepted by mainstream society. It's funny because for me I see the current ska scene as being accepting of everyone regardless of class, race etc. but the ska scene isn't accepted by a lot of mainstream society. Personally the recent comeback of bands like The Specials and Madness angers me because many of the people who attend these shows have no interest in ska today and I think it's a shame because there is some real talent in the UK's underground ska scene. Ska's moved on and these bands from the past did help create it and have inspired the current bands, but it's important to also acknowledge the development of the scene as it is now and recognise that new ska music is incredibly good and so varied (e.g. merging of funk and ska - ad7, merging of drum/bass, ska and punk - SB6). The messages that were given by ska bands in the past still remain but it's not really a new thing to sing about. It just reflects society as not having changed - if bands today are singing about the things that bands in the 1970s and 1980s were singing about surely that shows that there are still things in society that do need to change, and still haven't.

    Part 2 -Current Scene

    1. What is your current involvement in the current UK Ska scene? (eg. Fan, promoter, band member)

    Fan/occasional promoter

    2. Would you say that the current Ska scene is a thriving scene?

Yes, though I'm not sure I'd call it a purely "ska" scene that's currently active. Interpret that as you will.

    3. What aspects of the 2-Tone scene in the late 70s/ early 80s do you think are still present in the current scene?

Hard to say; attitude perhaps, sound itself draws influence but also includes influence from many other styles/genres

    4. Do you think the current scene has a distinct fashion image? (for example
like the tonic suit and pork pie hat of 2-Tone)

    No, not really

    5. Do you think that ska continues to carry the political and social dimension that it did at the emergence of 2-Tone?

Yes, for many bands at least. Some obviously not but then not all of them were overtly political back then either.

    6. Do you believe there is a geographical focus to Ska music in 2009 like there was in Coventry and the West Midlands in the late 70s?

    No, not at all.

    7. Do you think the nature of the current scene suggests it has a counter-cultural or alternative element to it? If so how is it the same/differs to the 2-Tone phenomenon?

Absolutely. It's an underground scene so the people involved with it are going to be "alternative" by definition; dress sense, world views, politics, etc. Not necessarily a uniform attitude though; many different ones present in the scene. Some influence from 2-tone era but this will vary greatly between individuals.

    8. Is Ska your favourite genre of music?

    Yes, I suppose.

    9. What type of Ska music do you listen to the most?

3rd wave, but would also argue for some sort of 4th wave of bands with a ska-influence (to varying degrees), often bringing in more metal and/or hiphop influences.
