    Smaller Than You "Who Knew"

    Who Knew
    Smaller Than You
    (Self Released, 2008)

Who Knew isn’t your bog standard ska-punk release. Not by a long shot, which is quite a surprise for a band as young as Smaller Than You. Instead, it’s actually a musically accomplished release that flits between brisk skank-ready numbers and calmed moments of steadiness. Add into the mix some jazz and a consortium of peripheral instruments, and you’re in the same ballpark as the band.

‘Can You Hear Me’, the stand-out track, probably sums the band up best. Composed upstrokes lead the way but a strong bass sound and some exemplary brass build this into something a bit more advanced. It’s almost like a jam session taking place in some smoky jazz club, a quirky charm resonating. ‘Open Minded’ is the leading example of the band at a quicker pace, bringing together a gang chorus and almost a ‘circus’ feel. This is the sound of a band having fun with what it’s doing.

As good as Who Knew sounds musically, there are also two recurring drawbacks to the EP. Firstly, the tracks tend to be a little overlong (not one song is under 3:40). Nobody will criticise a band for putting as much into a song as possible but there’s a definite feel that some of the tracks here, particularly the more up tempo songs, might have benefited from a bit of a shave. Secondly, the vocal doesn’t sit all that comfortably. It’s a little too lethargic at times, a little too plodding perhaps. In fairness, on repeated listens it tends to fit a little bit more each time, going some way to adding a certain amount of character to the sound.

There’s no doubt there’s talent on display here. Smaller Than You is definitely on the way to creating a sound all its own. It’s still not completely there, but points are definitely added for packing this release full of layers that can be stripped away, making each listen a little different to before. Encouraging stuff.

Big apologies to the band for taking absolutely forever in getting this reviewed. It wasn't my intention, but life is one busy mothertrucker.

Cheers for the review! I really want to build up some thoughts so we can improve in areas when we go into the studio again in March to record a new EP.

And your exactly right with the vocals sitting a bit uncomfortably and tracks being a bit long! We hear the second one a fair bit Smile
